Like many people, Canadians hate being asked stereotypical questions:
do you say “eh” a lot? Do you live in an igloo? Do you ride a moose to
work? To answer many of these questions, a simple face-palm will do. But
there is one question which is more difficult to answer: “How do you
feel about Justin Bieber”?
Canadians have always had mixed feelings about Justin Bieber: is he a
talented singer to be proud of? Or simply an embarrassment to
Canadians? If you go to Stratford, Ontario (Bieber’s birthplace) you’ll
notice streets littered with Bieber Fever. However, if you so much as
mention Justin Bieber
outside of Ontario, people will usually make a face similar to when you
eat gorgonzola for the first time. We will soon find out just how
popular The Bieb is in his home country when he heads to Canada for his
Purpose World Tour.
Whether you’re a fan or not of the young star, you will be shocked to
find out some of situations he has found himself in. Read on to learn
10 things you (probably) didn’t know about Justin Bieber.
10. HIS MOM EXPLOIT HIS FAME
In 2013, Pattie Mallette,
Justin Bieber’s mom, became an executive producer for an anti-abortion
film. Being Bieber’s mom of course, her stance on abortion spread like
fire in the media. The young singer was embarrassed by the situation.
However, that was not the only time Pattie Mallette took advantage of
her son’s fame. In 2012, she wrote a book entitled Nowhere but Up: The Story of Justin Bieber’s Mom. The book is a memoir of Justin’s Bieber’s childhood and reached #17 on the New York Times Best
Seller list during its first week of publication. So not only has his
mother used him his fame to push her own beliefs upon society, she also
used his fame for monetary purposes and maybe even to become a little
famous herself.
9. HE IS 2ND MOST FOLLOWED CELEBRITY ON TWITTER
8. EVEN HIS HAIR IS WORTH A FORTUNE
Allegedly, J-Biebs spends more on haircuts than most students spend
on rent. AOL claims he has spent up to $750 for his haircuts. Perhaps
his high maintenance is why he was able to sell his hair for $40,688 on
Ebay.
In 2011, Bieber gave a lock of his hair to Ellen DeGeneres on The Ellen Show. She
immediately put it for sale on Ebay. After only one hour, the lock
was already going for $10,000. She finally sold it for more than four
times that price. DeGeneres generously donated all the proceeds to The
Gentle Barn Foundation, a charity with the mission of “Teaching People
Kindness and compassion to Animals, Each Other, and Our Planet”.
7. HIS SONG "BABY" HAS MORE BILLION VIEWS
6. BINGES ON JUNK FOOD
According to Time, despite Bieber’s fame and fortune, he still
prefers humble food. His favourite sandwich is mayo and tomatoes on
Wonder Bread (apparently the brand of mayonnaise isn’t as important as
the brand of bread). His favourite cereals are Cap’n Crunch Berries and
Frosted Mini-Wheats (at leas the Mini-Wheats have fibre, Cap’n Crunch is
just plain bad for you). His favourite restaurant is also surprising:
T.G.I. Friday’s (How could it not be Tim Hortons?!).
5. USHER INITIALLY TURNED HIM DOWN
You may know that Usher
helped Justin Bieber start off his career and journey to stardom.
However, what you probably didn’t know is that Usher initially refused
to hear him sing, at least in person. After being rejected, the Biebs
tried his luck with another famous singer: Justin Timberlake.
But after watching his videos and seeing more potential in Justin
Bieber, Usher changed his mind. “Man, I should have let this kid sing!”
he thought. He decided to endorse him. Needless to say: ca-ching,
ca-ching.
4. NEVER SAY NEVER (2011) GROSSED 1OO MILLION
Despite a not so flattering review from New York Magazine, “a
bland profoundly unthreatening little Furby of a pop idol”, Bieber’s 3D
concert film and documentary grossed about $100 million worldwide. Rotten Tomatoes gave
the movie 64% on the tomatometer (the percentage of critics who have
given the movie a positive review). Most critics agreed that “as a tour
documentary, it’s rather uninspired-but as a 3D glimpse of a building
pop culture phenomenon, Never Say Never is undeniably entertaining.”
3. HE MARRIED ONE OF HIS FANS
Six-year-old Avalanna Routh had her dreams come true on Valentine’s day
2012. While battling ATRT, an aggressive form of brain cancer, Avalanna
was surprised by an unexpected visit from her favourite idol, Justin
Bieber. The two had a fun afternoon of playing board games, eating
cupcakes, signing autographs and finally getting “married”. “Mrs.
Bieber” even got to experience the joy of styling her “husband’s” hair. A
few months after Bieber’s visit, Avalanna passed away. Upon hearing the
news Bieber tweeted “Just got the worst news ever, one of the greatest
spirits I have ever known is gone…RIP Avalanna, I love you.”
2. HE WAS 2 HOURS LATE TO HIS OWN CONCERT
In 2013, Bieber was due to play in London, England at the O2 Arena. He
managed to show up, but he was two hours late. He arrived on stage at
10:23 pm, after the concert was supposed to have ended. Some of the
children had even fallen asleep as they waited for him to arrive. Others
were forced to leave (it was a school night after all). Parents were
understandably furious, calling him names such as “jerk”,
“disrespectful” and “arrogant”. To make matters worse, hundreds of fans
were stranded after the show, as trains had stopped running. Though the
O2 apologized for Bieber’s lateness, they never explained it. Bieber,
only perhaps truthfully, said it was due to “technical issues”.
1. HE THREW A TANTRUM AT A CONCERT IN NORWAY
Just a few months ago, Justin Bieber was supposed to perform at a
concert in Olso, Norway. Things were forced to a halt as a fan in the
front row spilled water on the stage (silly Biebs, everyone knows the
show must go on). As Bieber attempted to clean up the mess, fans
repeatedly attempted to touch him. Irritated, he started saying “Guys,
listen to me! Ok I’m trying to wipe the floor. Give me a second”.
However, the fans did not stop. Fans had no idea just how upset Bieber
was until he walked off stage saying “Never mind, I’m done, I’m not
doing the show”. Despite leaving his fans in tears, Bieber hopped on his
private jet and headed home (though he did stop to take pictures with
fans at the airport). Indeed, Bieber failed to be professional and keep
his emotions in check.
